Bus better with BEE

Bee Card is the cheapest way to travel and using a registered Bee Card means you're eligible for fare capping and free transfers between buses.

Our “tag on, tag off” system automatically calculates the lowest fare based on your travel. You must remember to tag off otherwise you'll be charged a higher default fare.

More about Bee Card can be found here.

Fares

Fares are calculated by the number of zones you travel through.

Using the map below, count the number of different zones between your start and end point. Then look at our fare table below to work out the cost of your trip.

Fare capping

Regular users travel cheaper with weekly fare caps.

On a registered Bee Card, once you spend a certain amount each week, from Monday to Sunday, all further bus travel in that zone is free. Simply tag on and off with your Bee Card to activate fare capping.

From 1 July 2024, a new youth fare capping system will be introduced, meaning riders aged 5-18 will be capped after 6.5 trips (with a registered Bee Card).

For example, in Hamilton this means the maximum an adult will pay per week is $21.60, and people 18 and under will pay no more than $15.60.

Fare capping is also available across zones – for example for people travelling through three zones, like Huntly / Cambridge / Te Awamutu / Morrinsville to Hamilton, the maximum weekly travel cost would be $43.20, and $31.20 for people 18 and under.

Fare capping is based on an individual's travel, activated by tagging on and off. You can still pay for other people's travel with your Bee Card - but this won't contribute to your capping limit.

Half price fares also applies to fare capping.

Transfers

Free transfers are available across all services within the region while using your Bee Card. This includes free transfers onto Hamilton buses from regional routes.

You’re eligible for free transfers for half an hour after tagging off before 7pm weekdays or an hour after tagging off after 7pm weekdays and on weekends and public holidays.

Cash fares do not receive free transfers.

Concessions

BUSIT offers a number of concessions to make travel by bus cheaper. We do not have a child concession as our fare capping scheme enables cheaper travel for children using the bus to travel to and from school.

Weekly fare caps apply after 6.5 trips for youth under 18 and after 9 trips from adults.

NOTE: Youth must have a registered Bee Card with their name and date of birthday to be eligible.
