A new direct bus service connecting the west and east of Hamilton will launch in 2021.
The service will replace the existing 2 Silverdale and 8 Frankton routes.
If you wish to make further comments about the proposed route, please email the team at busit@waikatoregion.govt.nz.
New proposed route
Western side of new route
The new route will replace the 8 Frankton service, linking the Rotokauri Rise, Nawton, Dinsdale and Frankton areas with the CBD, Hamilton East, University and Silverdale. The 15 minute frequency weekdays and 30 minute frequency evenings and weekends will greatly improve bus services for residents in the west side of the city.
As a part of the changes to the western side of the city's bus network, it's also proposed that the 3 Dinsdale and 9 Nawton services are reduced to hourly (instead of half hourly) between 9am and 3pm weekdays.

Proposed bus stop and infrastructure changes in Dinsdale
The Dinsdale area will benefit from the new bus service travelling nearer to the Dinsdale Shopping Centre and providing closer and more frequent buses to residents around the Thomson Ave and Dinsdale Road areas, with new bus stops proposed to be installed on these streets. We're also investigating the possibility of new bus stops on Massey Street.
There will no longer be a bus service along the eastern end of Aberdeen Drive, Rifle Range Road or Weka Street. Residents in this area will need to use the stops on the western end of Aberdeen Drive, Thomson Street or Massey Street.
- New bus stops on Thomson Street. The location of these stops will be considered in discussion with directly affected property owners and residents. Parking may have to be restricted in certain places for safety reasons and to improve the flow of traffic.
- New bus stops on Dinsdale Road.
- Investigating new bus stops on Massey Street.
- Bus stops on eastern end of Aberdeen Road, Rifle Range Road and Weka Street to be removed.

Proposed bus stop and infrastructure changes in Grandview
The bus route in the Grandview area will change from Bartholomew Drive and the western end of Grandview Road to travelling along Dominion Road, Grange Road and the eastern end of Grandview Road. This will provide a faster and more direct route.
The existing bus stops on Bartholomew Drive and the west end of Grandview Road will be removed. It’s also proposed to replace the stops at either end of Grange Road with new stops installed near the centre of the street.
Residents will now use the bus stops on Dominion Road, Grange Road and Hyde Ave instead.
- Remove stops on Bartholomew Drive.
- Remove stops on Grandview Road.
- Replace stops on Grange Road with new stops near the centre of the street.
Proposed bus stop and infrastructure changes in Frankton
The bus route in the Frankton area will change to travel along Hall Street, Lake Road and King Street.
- Bus stops on Commerce Street and the southern end of Norton Road to be removed.
- Bus stops on Rawhiti Street and Commerce Street to be removed.
- New bus stops to be installed on Lake Road.
Arriving at the Transport Centre
At the Transport Centre the bus will use stops on Bryce Street outside the main building. New bus stops will be installed on the Kmart side of Bryce Street. The route will use Bryce Street instead of inside the Transport Centre to ensure travel times are kept to a minimum.

Eastern side of new route
The eastern side of the city will benefit significantly from this new route, which will provide more frequent bus services to all areas of the University campus, eastern schools, shopping and residential areas.
In order to keep the route direct, link key destinations and keep journey times to a minimum, there will be changes made to the 2 Silverdale part of the route that is being replaced.

Proposed bus stop and infrastructure changes in Hamilton East
The Hamilton East area will now benefit from two high frequency bus services, the Orbiter and the new proposed route, both travelling along Clyde Street.
The new route will provide a quick and direct service to Hamilton's CBD as well as the University and Silverdale in the other direction. Keeping this service direct means the bus will no longer travel along Grey Street, Wellington Street or Fox Street. Alternative bus stops are a five to ten minute walk away on Clyde Street, Grey Street and the KFC end of Wellington Street.
- Investigate options to improve the priority for buses at the Grey Street and Anzac Parade intersection and along Clyde Street.
- Remove the five sets of bus stops on Wellington Street between Grey Street and Fox Street.
- Remove the bus stops on Fox Street near Clyde Street.

Proposed bus stop and infrastructure changes in Hillcrest
The route is proposed to travel along both Knighton Road and Hillcrest Road, providing frequent services to all locations on the University campus, as well as St John's College. Because of this change of route to serve the University, there will no longer be bus access on Edinburgh Road, Odonoghue Street, Vesty Ave and Carrington Ave.
Alternative bus stops are located a short distance away on Clyde Street, Hillcrest Road and Masters Ave.
- New bus stops to be installed on Hillcrest Road.
- New bus stops to be installed on Masters Ave.
- Bus stops on Edinburgh Road, Vesty Ave and Carrington Ave will be removed.
