30 September bus network changes

The Waikato Regional Public Transport Plan was adopted in early 2015, and outlined significant changes to the Hamilton bus network.

These changes include:

  • Improving bus services to growth areas.
  • Increasing the use of transport hubs such as The Base to improve transfers between buses.
  • Increasing the number of bus routes that run seven days a week.
  • Some bus routes have been merged and resource allocated to higher-demand areas.
  • Routes will be simplified, making them more direct by moving to main roads where we can run more buses more often. This means that some local roads may no longer be served by buses.

From 30 September 2017, around half (14 routes) in the Hamilton bus network will have changes. The remainder of the network, focusing on routes in the eastern side of the city, will change in January 2018.

Significant changes occurring on 30 September include:

  • The 15 Ruakura route will be disestablished, removing duplication of routes in this area

New, or refurbished buses will operate on the routes listed below:

  • Orbiter
  • 1 Pukete
  • 2 Silverdale
  • 3 Dinsdale
  • 6 Mahoe
  • 7 Glenview
  • 8 Frankton
  • 9 Nawton
  • 12 Fitzroy
  • 13 University
  • 18 Te Rapa
  • 26 Bremworth/Templeview
  • 29 Hamilton Gardens
  • These buses will have new, consistent liveries for ease of identification – green and silver for normal Hamilton routes, and purple and silver for Orbiter.
  • All buses on these routes will have on board CCTV.
  • The Orbiter will increase frequency to a bus at least every 15 minutes between 6am and 6pm Monday-Friday, with more services operating in peak times.
  • An additional three bus routes will be extended to The Base.
  • The 15 Ruakura service will be disestablished. This is due to low passenger numbers and duplication of routes in areas the bus serves.
  • Routes will be simplified, and in some cases combined to make them more direct by moving to main roads where we can run more buses more often. This means that some local roads may no longer be served by buses.
